About The Nav School
The Nav School is run by me, Mark Alan Prior
My initials are M-A-P. I was born to love maps.
I've spent more than 25 years competing in some of the world's most prestigious and demanding navigation events. I've raced on more than 1000 maps in over 50 countries, navigating forests, mountains, deserts, and dense urban terrain under pressure. I've represented the United States in international orienteering competitions, racing against the world's best, where flawless decision-making and absolute precision determine everything.
Adventure Racing & Multi-Sport
I've also competed extensively in multi-sport adventure races, usually serving as the team's navigator. My favorite format is the solo overnight race where navigation skills are paramount. I'm comfortable moving through complex, unfamiliar terrain in harsh conditions with minimal sleep, by foot, bike, and boat.
Teaching & Leadership
I currently serve as President of the San Diego Orienteering Club, helping grow navigation sports throughout California. I've developed training programs that support both beginners and experienced athletes in building strong navigation skills and disciplined decision-making. I also build forest and urban maps used for competition and instruction, giving me a deep technical understanding of terrain interpretation from the ground up.
My Approach
I bring real field experience, earned over decades, to every course I teach. My instruction is practical, direct, and focused on giving people the confidence to find their way in the real world. When I'm not teaching navigation, I'm usually outside sharing adventures with my two children on our Prior Adventures. Have questions about navigation classes, custom maps, or training programs? I'd love to hear from you. Email me at mark@navschool.org.
